Cryogenic Pipelines

Our cryogenic pipe-in-pipe (PIP) technology provides an advanced, reliable, and efficient solution for the transfer of cryogenic liquids at temperatures as low as -253°C

Key advantages

Our cryogenic PIP enable terminal architectures. Our unique design with expansion-controlled alloys eliminated expansion loops by allowing full buried or subsea placement of the cryogenic loading and boil-off gas pipelines. Perfect for transporting cryogenic liquids like LNG and LH2, our pipelines ensure optimal performance by reducing heat ingress and minimizing boil-off gas.

Market Needs

Long distance transport of gas is carried out in liquid form in order to allow for large volume to be transported by marine vessels. Since liquified gas needs to be maintained at cryogenic temperature throughout the supply chain. Our excellent thermal performance enhances the efficiency of pipeline transport of cryogenic fluids.

Moreover, our cryogenic pipeline solutions are uniquely designed to address the growing demand for LH2 (Liquid Hydrogen), LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), and ethane—key products in the global energy transition. These pipelines, tailored for subsea or buried applications, therefore provide an innovative and cost-effective solution for the safe and efficient transport of cryogenic fluids.

  • LH2 (Liquid Hydrogen) (-253°C): As a clean energy carrier crucial for decarbonizing industries and mobility, hydrogen infrastructure demands pipelines with advanced thermal performance to minimize boil-off gas and ensure safe, large-scale transport.
  • LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) (-160°C): LNG remains a cornerstone in global energy markets, balancing energy needs while reducing CO₂ emissions compared to traditional fuels. Efficient, reliable cryogenic pipelines are essential for LNG transfer to terminals and distribution points.
  • Ethane (-89°C): Vital for petrochemical industries, ethane transport requires robust cryogenic systems to handle low temperatures, ensuring product integrity while minimizing environmental impact.

Why PiP?

The double wall pipe-in-pipe configuration provides potential double containment and additional protection against external risks, as well as providing a closed annulus volume which allows for very sensitive pipeline integrity monitoring. The double envelope corresponds to the double-hulled carriers and full containment tanks, which are standard in the LNG industry. Furthermore, the use of expansion-controlled alloys allows our unique design to be fully buried, placed in horizontal directional drills our subsea, no need for regular expansion loops.

  • Superior Insulation with Izoflex LT®: Izoflex LT® insulation offers the lowest thermal conductivity on the market, reducing boil-off gas (BOG) and ensuring reliable transfer for hydrogen, LNG, and ethane. Compact and maintenance-free, it provides efficient and cost-effective pipeline operations.
  • 36Ni Alloy for Cryogenic Pipelines: Featuring a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and high strength and ductility at cryogenic temperatures, 36Ni alloy ensures durable, reliable performance, especially for the ultra-low temperatures required for LH2 (-253°C), LNG (-162°C), and ethane (-89°C). The 36Ni low CTE allows fully constrained pipeline design, eliminating expansion loops.
  • Double Containment Design: Our double-envelope system enhances safety and reliability, providing protection against external damage and potential leak containment for all transported cryogenic fluids.
  • Continuous Integrity Monitoring: Continuous pressure monitoring of the closed annulus volume provides a sensitive integrity monitoring solution. The simple system provides leak detection of both inner and outer pipe, ensuring safety and efficiency for the pipeline operator.

Your Benefits

By combining innovative materials like Izoflex LT® insulation and 36Ni alloy, alongside advanced monitoring systems and a robust double containment design, our PiP technology offers unmatched benefits:
