Absheron Pipeline

The Absheron project involves a 21 km subsea pipeline (12”/16”) in the Caspian Sea, transporting gas and condensate. Fabricated in Azerbaijan, it was installed using the S-lay method with Fast Field-Joint Sleeves, adapted to local installation vessel.

Our Challenge

The Absheron gas-condensate field, located in the Caspian Sea, posed significant challenges for Jocap (Total Energies and Socar), particularly due to the complex marine environment and the need to ensure the efficient transport of gas and condensate from offshore fields to onshore facilities.

The project involved the installation of a subsea pipeline over a distance of 21 km, requiring a robust pipeline solution, with a low U-value and suited to local installation assets.

Our Solution

For the Absheron project, ITP Pipeline delivered a highly efficient and tailored pipeline solution designed to meet the unique challenges of subsea gas and condensate transportation. Our approach incorporated the following key features :

  • U-value < 0.9 W/m²·K: We utilized an ultra-compact design to achieve the required U-value, ensuring optimal thermal performance. This design minimized top tension, enhanced stability, and reduced the amount of materials needed, making it both cost-effective and efficient.
  • Single offshore weld: The use of a Swaged Pipe-in-Pipe (PiP) system allowed for inner and outer pipe coupling, enabling the use of smaller vessels more suited for single-pipe installation. This streamlined the installation process, reducing logistical complexities and costs while still achieving the performance required for the project.
  • Local Content: The PiP system was fabricated in Azerbaijan, supporting local content requirements and ensuring robust implementation. This approach not only boosted the regional economy but also ensured high-quality fabrication close to the project site, optimizing delivery timelines and minimizing potential logistical challenges.

Our Key to Success

The success of the Absheron project was largely due to ITP Pipeline’s ability to meet Jocap’s stringent requirements for a highly reliable and efficient pipeline system. Our ability to fabricate the pipeline locally in Azerbaijan allowed for rapid deployment, while the field-joint allowed for rapid S-lay installation.
